Final Piece Evaluation
Evaluation
For my final piece, I used the maps as my main influence, drawing them in fine-liner onto the background of my tea stained canvases. I'm glad I used tea to stain my canvases rather than paint, as the tea symbolizes my family's work history, which adds another layer of meaning, I could have added some tea leaves onto the canvases to add more texture, which would have made the tea concept more obvious.
This is my final piece. I used the tea staining, textiles (the thread tieing the canvases together and the sewing around the photos and embroidering the words), drawing (for the maps), and burning the holes in the canvas. From afar, you can tell its an old map, but when you get closer you can see the details of the map, and when and where its from.

Here are close-ups of the canvases, I tried to line them up best I could by sewing them together, they had a bit of give which meant I could alter them slightly once they were hung up. The green represents two things, the valley in which my great grandad died, and the connotations green has associated with it, green is positive and safe, just like how people would of viewed India whilst trying to escape Burma.
The red/brown thread was meant to symbolise destruction, how Rangoon, the capital, was destroyed to prevent it coming under enemy control and how red makes people think of danger and the urgency to escape.
A close-up of some of the photos given to me, taken by a relative in Burma. Getting higher up, closer to the canvases, where the photo on the far right has burnt edges, showing the destruction. And on the far left (not in this photo) a family portrait taken when everything seemed so peaceful.
My paragraph which was put next to my piece.
In reflection, I could have used more canvases, and sewed them together but showing destruction through the crookedness of the threads. I could if incorporated quotes from the newspaper article into my piece, giving it another layer of emotion also, I think I could of managed my time slightly more efficiently also, but overall I'm happy with the outcome of my final piece.
I also could of made the piece look more organic and raw, using less colour, and not staining the whole canvas, giving it a more natural feel, focusing less on making the map look realistic and more so following the journey across the canvases, incorporating the white of the canvas underneath instead of hiding it.
