“A drawing is taking a line for a walk”
Artists research
Rachel Perry was an American artist born in 1962. Her work is mostly conceptual, using a variety of mediums including photography, video, drawing, sculpture and performance.
A piece of work by her which I find inspiring is ‘Chiral Lines’ which is using lines in a unique way. She uses all the drawing materials she can find to draw lines onto paper, this first piece uses two piece of paper, using the same pens but one with her left hand and one with her right.
The lines look similar but the differ as one small moment can become exaggerated very quick by the repetitive lines. Some of her work is presented larger than others which shows the time taken, to firstly find all the drawing materials, pens and pencils and markers etc, and then draw lines very close together without overlapping and to try and keep the work looking near, although the lines aren’t straight, it shows the naturalness and the unique style of each piece. When presenting her work, Perry uses very large scale pieces, which are very bold and make them stand out more.
A quote from Rachel Perry:
“The Chiral drawings began as an attempt to make a drawing using every single pen, pencil, crayon, coloured pencil and marker I own. I scoured each drawer, surface and even the car console for writing implements. Once I had gathered them I decided to limit the expression to the simplest gesture: a line. Each subsequent line, made with a different implement used only once, follows the previous. As the drawing builds, the lines swiftly begin to tremble with a seismic quality, recording the history of the mark making, as well as the history of a household.
In the interest of making a “whole” drawing, and in thinking about the body, I decided to use both my left hand and my right hand. The word “chiral” refers to a non-superimposable mirror image. Our hands themselves are an example of chirality.
As I was making these I was also thinking about the notion of the copy, the reproduction of an image. Each set of drawings is an imperfect mirror image, and a suggestion of the impossibility of making the same thing twice. “– RP, November 24, 2014
“A drawing is taking a line for a walk” - Paul Klee
For our piece in response to this statement, in the same style as Perry, Ill collect all the pens on me, in my bag, and will create lines on a large (A3) piece of paper, similar to the first photo on this blog post. Using my own pens will make it more personal, these pens come on a walk with me everyday in my bag, and are now walking along the paper next to each other creating very bold lined as the colours clash together.
