Textiles sketchbook


These are some pages out of my textiles sketchbook, where I focus on looking at different textures and how to incorporate textiles into my final.
Drawing with finalisers straight onto fabric, I found the ink from the finalisers bleed, so I might try finalisers onto canvas to try and help prevent this.

Embroidery in black thread over cream fabric, using a tea stain to add accents, this bleed a lot and lost most of the definition it had.

These two pages were blue fabric which i painted with a mix of white and beige acrylic, and on the left I added dashes of red also, I did several layers until the blue wasn't coming through any more, and then I used pens to write over, on the left writing out an extract from the newspaper article and on the right writing phrases from the same article.

I used a beige fabric that's a bit thicker than the previous one, which gave it more structure, and I then used green acrylic  to cover up stars on the fabric because it didn't go with my concept, and the green acrylic mimics the forests and jungles. I used embroidery to create a map, and before gluing it into my book I folded it to give it more texture.

Experiments continued

The second workshop we did was printing, we did monoprints (addition, subtraction and relief), collographs and embossing. For the collographs and embossing we used a press. This piece i did on some old music paper I had, I used subtraction monoprinting and I dampened the paper and this was the look I got in the end. This piece I did on dry paper using addition monoprinting, This is my favourite piece by far as it slightly resembles a face, and has a mysterious feel to it. This was the final outcome of the experiments I did on printing, the top 2 are monoprints and the bottom 2 are collogrpahs. I did a small print of an eye on top using relief monoprinting, the middle piece is the plate I used for the collograph, and ther bottom one is a emboss of the above stamping plate.

Background of final developments

Map development for background of final During my research, I came across a website (angloburmeselibrary.com) where I found many more documents and information I wanted to incorporate into my final piece. One main piece of information I found was a map showing evacuation routes on foot from Burma to Assam, India. This map intrigued me as its all hand written and contains so much detail, and someone would of had to draw this out, and in 1942, I assume it would be rather difficult to plan to evacuate a whole city, so although its just a map at first glance, the marks made represent the emotion of the artist who created it, and how some of the towns names are scribbled and messy, whereas some are neat in capitals. This shows a variation in the marks created.  I want to incorporate this map onto the background of my piece, on canvas, I've gone several trials on different backgrounds to come to the conclusion of which background would be best. Mark Marking

Over half term I had to create 10 pages of work relating to mark making and to my journey. I found this quite overwhelming as I wasn't sure how I'd start. I began my starting with lines using varying colours of biro. The piece on the left was inspired by maps which I'd looked at when researching my journey. I used contour lines to mimic the mountains, and the red and blue colours were used on some of the maps also. On the right, I used the hatching and two shades of blue biro to create an abstract gemstone from my ring which I'd used to focus on in my matchbox.
